Did you know that military members can get most personal credit cards without paying annual fees? If you are active duty, or a reservist or guardsman on orders for 30 or more days, you could benefit from the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act rules. These rules allow you to get many credit cards with no annual fee for you and your spouse, saving you hundreds to thousands of dollars and providing incredible travel benefits for your family.
You can have multiple cards as well. However, if you plan on exploring the American Express ecosystem, you must get the American Express Gold before the Platinum card due to recent rule changes. If you're building your credit from scratch, consider starting with an AAFES card, using it responsibly, and paying it off monthly. After six months, you can apply for points cards, keeping in mind that you can only have a maximum of five credit cards in a 24-month period and must pay off all balances at the end of each month to maintain a strong credit score.
My recommendation is to start with the Chase Sapphire Reserve, then move on to the Amex Gold Card, and finally the Amex Platinum. Additionally, if you are married, you can refer your spouse to the same card you have, as spouses receive the same benefits as military members. Just be sure to check the Military Lending Act website list before applying to ensure they are listed in DEERS.
I have created a free military award travel class, and I would love to share it with you. Please visit our Consulting Services page to access the course and learn more about the incredible benefits available to military members when it comes to award travel

Enrollment required, plus it added an up to $120 annually ($10 per month) in Uber Cash, which can be used on Uber Eats orders or Uber rides in the U.S. All this make it a very strong contender for all food purchases, which has become a popular spending category. The Chase Sapphire Reserve® Card is one of the most popular travel rewards credit card on the market.
